How can I transfer videos from a non-digital video camera to my computer?

I've got an older video camera that is not digital and I can't transfer video to my computer. When I hook-up the camera to the computer using the USB cord that came with the camera, nothing happens. And when I search the computer for video cameras it doesn't show up. It's like the comp doesn't even read it. I don't know if there was ever a disc with the camera but if there was it's long gone. The camera is a Sony Handycam Hi8. Not sure what year. What can I do? I really want to edit my videos.

  1. if it came with a disk u need to pop it in and install because it needs the drivers to read it and if it didnt come with a disk go to the website and look up the camera model and search for a driver
  2. I have one of those, from 1995, it held mini video tapes, so far the only answer that I ve got on how 2 transfer was they have to be placed in a machine that copies the tape onto disk since the handy cam didnt have actual copying capability or a memory capability like the current digital cameras..You should have seen the size of the early 90s video recorders, they actuaaly held vhs tapes and were the size of bread boxes
  3. Hi8 is analog. Youneed to get an "analog/digital bridge" like those from Canopus or Pinnacle (Dazzle). USB transfer will not work. That is used for streaming or transferring stills from a memory card only.
